The Gwyn Jones Preview

With the Dragons facing their biggest game of the season, the club has had to tackle a very difficult week to say the least. It was strange news indeed to hear about the departure of their Director of Rugby Lyn Jones. It just doesn't make sense and it's obvious that there have been underlying tensions behind closed doors.

Lyn has been a good coach for the Dragons and has introduced a number of new young talents to the team, despite their scant finances in comparison to the other Welsh regions and the other major European clubs.

However they have had a disappointing season. They have only won four games in the Guinness Pro12 league – the same as Zebre.

The timing doesn't make sense at all. They have just beaten Gloucester and in the semifinals of the European Challenge Cup and then suddenly their head coach leaves. The supporters will be bitterly disappointed with the situation.

So coach Kingsley Jones has prepared the team for the Montpelier game. Kingsley has been in charge for the last two weeks while Lyn was ill and is unlikely to tinker with the tactics and the game philosophy too much.

The Dragons have already won away from home in France in this competition, at Pau, and Montpellier can be a very inconsistent side.

But they have some class players in Bismarck, Jannie du Plessis and Pierre Spies, and of course a top head coach in Jake White. When they really want to win, they will up the level.

The Dragons can stop teams from playing effectively, but unfortunately I can't see them getting many opportunities to score tries against Montpellier

With the final within the grasp, I can't see them taking the Dragons as lightly as Gloucester did. The Dragons are certainly a hard-working side, but at this level you need the talent to score tries.

The only hope is that it doesn't turn into a one-sided affair and that the Dragons can stay in the game and perhaps snatch it in the end. We live in hope.

In the Champions Cup, I think the Saracens will be too strong for the Wasps, despite the fact that the Wasps have played the best rugby of the tournament.

It should be a tight affair between Leicester Tigers and Racing Metro in the other match, but the grit and determination of the home team should see them through. However, a great deal will depend on the left foot of Dan Carter.
