Wales v New Zealand football international - Live on S4C

22 May 2007

S4C has won the rights to broadcast the Wales v New Zealand football friendly on 26 May, live and exclusive on terrestrial television.

S4C’s Y Clwb Pêl-droed Rhyngwladol, produced for S4C by BBC Wales and presented by Gareth Roberts, will be at the Racecourse Ground, Wrexham on Saturday, 26 May (programme starts at 2.45pm, kick off at 3.00pm).

Geraint Rowlands, S4C’s Content Editor, Sport says, “Broadcasting the game live clearly underlines S4C’s commitment to football in Wales. S4C is keen to cover as many Welsh matches as possible. These are exciting times for John Toshack’s side as they prepare for the forthcoming European Championship qualifiers and build for the next World Cup qualification campaign.”

John Toshack hopes to have most of his senior squad players available for this encounter, as he prepares for the Wales v Czech Republic qualifier which will be broadcast in full on S4C just hours after the match on 2 June.

Premiership stars such as captain Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Simon Davies are expected in the squad as well as new caps such as Barnsley striker Daniel Nardiello, whose father, Donato played for Wales in the 1970s.

New Zealand, which last qualified for the World Cup in 1982, are preparing for the World Cup qualifying campaign next year by bringing over an experimental 20-man squad to play Wales and Ukraine. They will be itching to bounce back from two recent heavy defeats against Costa Rica and Venezuela.
