Cyw on the road this week

16 June 2008

Youngsters from across Wales will get a chance to meet Cyw, the friendly face of S4C’s new Welsh language nursery service, as part of a special bus tour travelling across the country this month.

The tour will visit schools and nursery groups in Wrexham, Dolgellau, Llanelli, Neath and Cardiff, where youngsters will come face-to-face with Cyw (the Welsh word for chick, pronounced ‘q’) and children’s favourites Sali Mali and Now from Ribidirês.

The characters are visiting schools across the country in a colourful double decker bus to help promote the ground-breaking new service, which goes live on S4C Digidol on 23 June.

During the visit, there’ll be a chance to hear the Cyw theme song and learn more about the year-round service, which will be broadcast Mondays to Fridays, 7.00am-1.30pm.

The bus tour will reach its climax at Cardiff’s Welsh Language Tafwyl Festival in Cardiff Bay on Friday, 20 June, organised by the Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin nursery groups organisation.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said: “This is a very exciting time for S4C as we prepare for the on-air launch of S4C’s new nursery service, Cyw, which significantly extends Welsh language provision for young children. This bus tour will enable youngsters across Wales to get to know Cyw before the service starts on 23 June.”

A lively bilingual website - s4c.co.uk/cyw - full of games and activities, as well as information for parents, will accompany the new service. Many programmes will be available to watch on-line, while English subtitles will also be available on most shows.

S4C Digidol is available free-to-air in Wales on Sky 104, Freeview 4, Virgin TV 194 and Freesat 104. Outside Wales, S4C Digidol is available on Sky 134 and Freesat 120
