On the last day of the Royal Welsh Show yesterday (24 July) Meinir Jones, a presenter on S4C's agriculture series Ffermio, was awarded the Farmers' Union of Wales Bob Davies Memorial Award.
Meinir comes from Carmarthenshire, and was raised on Maesteilo Farm in Capel Isaac where she still enjoys helping out with work on the farm whenever possible. She was nominated for the award by farmers in Pembrokeshire who were impressed by her item on S4C's Ffermio about the effect of bovine TB and the Welsh Government's current eradication policy.
The award is given in memory of Bob Davies from Welshpool, reporter for Farmers Weekly Wales who passed away in December 2009. The award was a shepherd's crook carved by Aberystwyth stick maker, Hywel Evans.
The award was presented to Meinir by the president of the Farmers Union of Wales, Emyr Jones, for her work as a media personality who has raised the public profile of Welsh farming.
Meinir Jones said, "Accepting this award was a great privilege and I'm very grateful to those who nominated me and to the Farmers Union of Wales.
"I feel so fortunate to be doing this job, presenting on Ffermio. It's a privilege and an honour to get to travel around Wales and beyond to meet people who are so enthusiastic and passionate about the industry and rural affairs in general.
"It's easy to see how dedicate the farmers are, and they give 100% to make sure that the food that's on our plates is of the very best quality. I'm proud of being a farmer myself, and love being able to combine that interest with my day to day work."
Gwawr Martha Lloyd, Commissioner of S4C's Ffermio, was very glad to hear of Meinir's success.
"S4C's farming series are of the highest quality and substance, and that's down to the hard work of the production companies of course, but also to the presenters.
"Meinir, and all the other Ffermio and Cefn Gwlad presenters live and work in farming communities in rural Wales, and their passion for farming and all the issues that affect the industry are apparent when they're presenting.
"Many congratulations to Meinir on being awarded the Bob Davies Memorial Award, it is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the industry."
