Welsh Premier League and Sgorio at the heart of our schedule – S4C

14 August 2014

A new season and a new era in the history of Welsh sport broadcasting – and live coverage and highlights from the Welsh Premier League on the flagship football show Sgorio will remain as important as ever in the S4C schedule.

Llion Iwan, S4C Content Commissioner for Sport and Factual, made his comments as Sgorio unveiled its live match schedule as part of the new Sunday afternoon sports show Clwb.

Sgorio will return on Sunday, 7 September as part of the show Clwb when Nicky John presents Rhyl v Aberystwyth live at 1.00pm. The programme will also feature highlights from other games in the Welsh Premier League.

English commentary on the red button/audio select option will be available on the live coverage.

Llion Iwan, S4C Content Commissioner for Sport and Factual said;

"Sgorio is moving to Sundays from 7 September as part of the new sports series Clwb. It's an exciting new chapter in Welsh football broadcasting. We are totally committed to providing live coverage and highlights of the Welsh Premier League on Sunday afternoons. Sgorio has eight live games involving the all 12 WPL in the first two months. We appreciate that we have a unique provision in the form of the Welsh Premier League and it will remain central to our sport provision.

"There will be a live game from the Welsh Premier League or from the Welsh Cup competitions almost every week during the season, along with football highlights and extensive match analysis from experts such as Malcolm Allen. All the elements of the Welsh Premier League will therefore be covered on Sgorio on Sunday afternoons, as part of Clwb, which will also cover other sports.

"Nicky John will present Sgorio, as Dylan Ebenezer is moving over to anchor Clwb, which will also provide plenty of opportunity to discuss football during the afternoon, as well as showing regular highlights of Wrexham's campaign in the Vanarama Conference. The programme will also provide a platform for viewers to have their say through social media and will give us the breaking news from football grounds across the UK.”

Llion Iwan says that S4C will broadcast 30 matches form the Welsh Premier League and Welsh cup competitions and that highlights will be shown regularly. The channel has already broadcast the New Saints’ matches in the Champions League qualifiers and the Cardiff v VfL Wolfsburg and Swansea v Villarreal prestige friendlies which reflects S4C’s commitment to broadcast as much football as possible.

"Viewers will be able to watch Sgorio on the S4C website on S4C's on-demand service Clic for 35 days after the initial broadcast. Welsh Premier League highlights which are shown on Clwb outside the Sgorio slot will be available also on the S4C website.

"Sgorio won’t be able to show highlights of La Liga's Primera on S4C on Sundays as we do not have the broadcasting rights."
