S4C pays tribute to two of Wales' great performing talents

26 February 2018

Amanda Rees, S4C's Creative Director Content has paid tribute to two men who made a huge contribution to Welsh entertainment.

Actor Trefor Selway and musician John Griffiths both died over the weekend.

Amanda Rees said of the actor from Eglwysbach, Conwy Valley who starred in drama series and films such as Mostyn Fflint 'N Aye!, Oed yr Addewid, Y Palmant Aur and Hafod Haidd;

"It was sad to hear of the death of Trefor Selway, the actor and entertainer who was among the pioneers of Welsh-language television entertainment who helped to secure the channel's success from the early days. He could play both tragic and funny characters and excelled in classical stage drama, comedies, family drama and soul-searching films. In expressing our condolences to the family, we would like to pay tribute to a master of characterisation and an eloquent presenter."

Speaking about the bass guitarist from Pontrhydyfen, who is most famous for playing with the 1970s and early 1980s band Edward H, Dafis, but who also played for Injaroc and Hergest among others;

"John Griffiths' contribution to Welsh music was immense and he will be greatly missed. As a bass guitarist with one of the biggest Welsh language rock bands of all time, Edward H. Dafis, he helped to inspire hundreds of young people to pick up the guitar and make music in Welsh. He also made a huge contribution as a session guitarist, playing on many S4C music and entertainment shows, persuading a generation of Welsh people to enjoy, follow and get up and dance to Welsh bands."
