Beryl wins Bafta Cymru award

 S4C’s multi award-winning film about a larger than life, middle aged heroine called Beryl has won its latest prize, the Bafta Cymru award for Best Animation.

Beryl, Y Briodas a’r Fideo/Family Ties – Dreams and Desires, a ten-minute film by twice Oscar-nominated Joanna Quinn, made for S4C by Beryl Productions, joins seven other S4C programmes to win prizes at the Bafta Cymru Awards ceremony.

The Gwyn Alf Williams Award, given to a programme or series which has contributed to an understanding and appreciation of Welsh history, was awarded to Judith Davies and Jonathan Owen for Aberfan, a documentary about the fortieth anniversary of the disaster, produced in Welsh for S4C and in English for ITV Wales.

Two S4C productions which received recognition at the recent Celtic Media Festival also won Bafta Cymru awards. Y Pianydd – Llŷr Williams, a documentary by Opus TF about the renowned pianist, scooped the Best Music Programme award. Gareth Bryn won the award for Best Newcomer, for his work as a director on the light drama, Cowbois ac Injans, also made by Opus TF.

Campyfan, produced for S4C by BBC Cymru, won the award for Best Children’s Programme, while an edition of the current affairs programme, Taro Naw, about Chernobyl, also produced for S4C by BBC Cymru, won the award for Best Current Affairs.

S4C’s record-breaking entertainment extravaganza, Jones Jones Jones, produced by Cwmni Da, won the award for Best Sound. Paparazzi, made by Fflic, won the award for Best Graphics/Titles.

Rhian Gibson, S4C’s Director of Commissioning, said: “These prizes, across a range of categories and programme genres, reflect the strength of S4C’s creative partnership with the independent sector and the BBC. Congratulations to all involved.”
