Côr Cymru 2011 semi-finalists

      The choirs who have made it through to the semi-final rounds of S4C’s Côr Cymru 2011 competition have been announced.

The Côr Cymru 2011 semi-finals will be held at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre on the weekend 4 to 6 March, 2011. Highlights will be broadcast on S4C on the following weekend, 12 and 13 March.

Competing in the Children’s Choir category will be Côr y Cwm, Rhondda; Côr Iau Glanaethwy; Côr Ieuenctid Môn; and Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion, from Newcastle Emlyn.

Aelwyd y Waun Ddyfal, from Cardiff; Côr Hŷn Glanaethwy; Côr y Drindod Dewi Sant and Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion will be competing in the Youth Choirs category.

The Female Voice Choirs are Cantata, Llanelli; Côr Ysgol Lewis i Ferched, Ystrad Mynach; Parti Llwchwr; and Côr Ieuenctid Canol Powys, Llandrindod Wells. In the Male Voice Choirs category, Cardiff choir Bechgyn Bro Taf compete with Eschoir of London, Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion and Côr Meibion Rhos, Rhosllannerchrugog.

Competing in the Mixed Voice Choirs category are ABC, Aberystwyth; CF1, Cardiff; Côr Rhuthun, Rhuthin; and Cywair, of Newcastle Emlyn.

The Youth Choirs will kick off the competition on Friday 4 March at 20:00. On Saturday 5 March the Children’s Choirs will take to the stage at 14:00 with the Male Voice Choirs in the evening at 20:00. On Sunday afternoon, 6 March at 14:00, the Mixed Voice Choirs will compete and the Female Voice Choirs bring the semi-finals to a close at 20:00.

Producer Gwawr Owen of Rondo Media said, “The semi-final weekend is a very special event. Aberystwyth’s Arts Centre is a wonderful stage for the choirs and the atmosphere there is always electric.

“One additional advantage for all those who attend the semi-finals is that they will be given priority when applying for tickets for the final on 10 April.”

The winners in each category will receive a £1,500 prize and will go on to compete against each other in the final, with and additional £5,000 prize for the winners. The final round will be held on Sunday 10 April at the Aberystwyth Arts Centre. The final will be broadcast live on S4C.

This is the fifth S4C Côr Cymru competition; previous winners are Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion (2009), Côr Cywair (2007), Serendipity (2005) and Ysgol Gerdd Ceredigion (2003).
