Success for Rapsgaliwn and Mistar Urdd in Derry

19 April 2012

Two of Wales’ best loved children’s characters Rapsgaliwn and Mistar Urdd have won an award at the 2012 Celtic Media Festival.

The popular Cyw character and Urdd mascot came top of the Marketing Campaign category for their new version of the popular song Hei Mistar Urdd.

The video was produced by the S4C marketing department, Boomerang production company and the Urdd youth movement to promote S4C’s coverage of the Swansea Urdd Eisteddfod in 2011.

The classic song Hei Mistar Urdd has been an anthem for generations of children since it was first released in 1976. The original was composed by musician Geraint Davies, member of Welsh folk music groups Hergest and Mynediad am Ddim. But the new version gives it a 21st century feel.

Ian Jones, S4C Chief Executive, said, “Congratulations to the team who received this award at the Celtic Media Festival 2012 in Derry.

“Receiving this recognition from representatives of the industry in all the Celtic countries crowns the excellent work done by everyone to produce this successful marketing campaign.”

Aled Sion, Director of the Urdd Eisteddfod, says, “The Urdd congratulates S4C on their success at the Celtic Media Festival, and is proud of the relationship between the youth movement and the channel.

“The campaign and the song which was produced last year using Rapsgaliwn and Mistar Urdd proved very popular and contributed to the success of the Urdd Eisteddfod in 2011.”

Each one of S4C’s nominations received high praise by the judges at the annual Celtic Media Festival which is held this year in the city of Derry on Wednesday to Friday 18-20 April.

On Friday evening the festival’s main accolade The Spirit of the Festival will be awarded. Last year, the award was given to the first series of Ras yn Erbyn Amser which saw Lowri Morgan complete a marathon in the Amazon Jungle.
