Special Award for S4C Series about Gwynedd Life Boat Crew

04 July 2014

An S4C documentary series has been given a special award by the Royal National Lifeboat Institutional (RNLI) for its memorable portrayal of the Porthdinllaen Life Boat crew in Morfa Nefyn on the Llŷn Peninsula.

Production Company Cwmni Da from Caernarfon, who produced the series Bad Achub Porthdinllaen for S4C, was named the Regional Winner in the Media Relations category at the RNLI Supporter Awards 2014.

The six-part series which was broadcast on S4C in September 2013 spends a year on board the Porthdinllaen lifeboat in Gwynedd.

The series is a gripping portrayal of the lifeboat's colourful crew who face the challenge of responding to emergency shouts during a time when they had to bid adieu to the old boat and sail home in a new, modern one.

The award was presented to Mali Parry-Jones, series producer, in an awards ceremony at Swansea's National Waterfront Museum.

Eleri Roberts, Press Officer at the RNLI's West Region said:

"It was a great pleasure to present the award to Mali and Cwmni Da for all the support they've given the charity over the last two years. The RNLI has had a fantastic response to the series; we're very grateful to Cwmni Da for creating and supporting the series which gave S4C viewers a glimpse of how dedicate the RNLI volunteers are, and how hard they work to save lives at sea."

Mali Parry-Jones from Morfa Nefyn is a member of the Porthdinllaen life boat crew, and was also responsible for producing and directing Bad Achub Porthdinllaen.

Mali Parry-Jones said:

"The lifeboat is a big part of the community in Porthdinllaen; it's a part of the area's history. We had a great time filming the series even though it could be challenging at times – it wasn't easy holding the camera whilst rushing out on a call!

"Accepting the award was a very special experience. It was a privilege to be recognised for all the hard work, and I was so glad to be able to receive the award on behalf of, not only the Porthdinllaen lifeboat crew, but also on behalf of Cwmni Da and S4C as well. The recognition means a lot to me."

Llion Iwan, S4C Content Commissioner said:

"I'm so glad that the series and its contributors have been given this recognition, which is a tribute to their dedication to the life boat service. I'd like to offer them my sincerest congratulations, and to thank them again for all their work on the series."
