Watch Dan y Wenallt before it hits TV screen

09 December 2014

On Thursday, 11 December a new vivacious take on Dan y Wenallt (Under Milk Wood) will hit cinema screens around Wales.

The cinematic adaptation of Dylan Thomas's play for voices will be shown on S4C on 27 December, but selected theatres around Wales will show a special screening of the film before it hits our TV screens. The film will be shown in the theatres in the following locations: Cardiff, Oswestry, Fishguard, Monmouth, Llancarfan, Anglesey, and Tywyn. It will appear in Ffwrnes Theatre, Llanelli on 16 December with a question and answer session after the film.

The radically surreal and erotic Welsh-language film reunites director Kevin Allen with Rhys Ifans over 15 years after the release of their cult classic Twin Town. An ensemble cast of familiar Welsh faces is led by Ifans as First Voice and Captain Cat, alongside Charlotte Church as Polly Garter.

This is the first cinematic dramatisation of Thomas’ text since Richard Burton’s 1972 version, and will truly bring the Welsh poet’s legacy into the 21st Century on the centenary of his birth.

Adapted into Welsh by T. James Jones, and with a screenplay by Murray Lachlan Young, Michael Breen and director Kevin Allen, Dan Y Wenallt explores the rich imagery of Thomas’s dreamlike verse. Allen notes of his visceral and visual interpretation “I was determined to craft a cinematic rendition that challenged the common perception; that poetry should remain in the domain of the reader.”
