Wales' Grand Slam-winning team head to Japan in September in pursuit of an even bigger prize – the 2019 Rugby World Cup.

As Warren Gatland's side prepare for their opening match against Georgia on September 23, viewers will be able to see live coverage and highlights of every Wales game on S4C and S4C Clic.

Before then, there will be live coverage and highlights of the competition's curtain-raiser between hosts Japan and Russia will be shown live on Friday 20 September.

S4C will also show a game from each of the knock out stages and the Rugby World Cup final live on Saturday 2 November, regardless of whether Wales will feature.

The S4C presenting team will be at the heart of things in Japan to bring the latest developments from the Wales squad, exclusive interviews and sharp analysis. Gareth Rhys Owen will anchor S4C's coverage alongside reporter Catrin Heledd.

Former Wales captain Gwyn Jones and former Wales outside-half Nicky Robinson will analyse the action alongside a selection of special guests, including former Wales and Lions scrum-half Mike Phillips.

Wyn Gruffudd and former Wales lock Deiniol Jones will be in the commentary box. Whisper Cymru and Lens360 will produce S4C's coverage of the competition.

Gareth Rhys Owen said: "With Warren Gatland's time with Wales coming to an end in Japan, there is only one thing left for him and his team to achieve – to become world champions. And there's no doubt that's exactly what they will be aiming to do.

"The S4C team will follow the Wales camp closely to try to share the team's experiences on and off the pitch, and to give viewers a taste of the true Japan. We aim to provide unbeatable coverage of the Welsh team throughout the competition."

S4C's coverage from Japan will continue beyond the final whistle with the series, Sushi, Sake a Rygbi, which will look at the tournament and Wales' progress from a lighter perspective.

The channel's schedule will mark the Rugby World Cup in a number of different ways, starting in August with a series of short films, Chwedloni, which will tell rugby tales from different voices across Wales.

The chat show Jonathan will return during the Rugby World Cup to raise a smile whatever the outcome, with famous guests and their fascinating and funny stories.

Before the competition, we will look back at some of Wales' fondest World Cup memories with Clasuron Cwpan y Byd and Cwpan y Byd Cymru, which will show the team's most momentous campaigns and victories.

The BAFTA Cymru award-winning children's series, CIC, also returns to the screen to look at all things rugby in the company of Heledd Anna and Billy McBryde.

Amanda Rees, S4C Creative Content Director, said: "We're thrilled to be following this exciting Welsh team on their historic journey in Japan.

"Our range of programmes will showcase the team's experiences during the Rugby World Cup and our excellent broadcast team will guide us through it all. Our viewers at home will get every opportunity to share the passion on S4C."

Martyn Phillips, Welsh Rugby Union CEO, said: "Welsh language broadcasting and the Welsh Rugby Union go hand in hand.

"I know it will come as welcome news to the team that S4C will be out in Japan following them every step of the way and we are grateful for the continued commitment to Welsh rugby shown by our long time broadcast partner."

As well as the on-screen coverage, the @S4Cchwaraeon social media channels will host several special items on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram during the championship.
