With concerns about Covid-19 forcing schools across Wales to shut their doors today (Friday, March 20, 2020), S4C has launched Ysgol Cyw (Cyw's School) – a package of educational programmes for young children.
S4C has searched through the channel's Cyw and Stwnsh programmes to create a collection of educational material in order to ensure that learning can continue, despite schools being closed.
This includes Cyw and Stwnsh television series on S4C as well as digital resources and apps to help parents who are at home with young children and looking for high quality content to amuse and educate their children.
S4C Children's Commissioner Sioned Wyn Roberts said: "Because the schools are closed there will be lots of parents at home with their children and are worried about their education. One of the most useful things we at S4C can do over this difficult time is to offer opportunities for young children to continue learning while the schools are closed."
"Commissioning content which helps children to learn through play has always been at the heart of the service, so the intention with Ysgol Cyw is to draw the attention of parents and children to these series and digital content. Stwnsh also offers factual entertainment series which present information and are fun too. S4C is here for you."
Ysgol Cyw programmes offer help with literacy and numeracy with some having been created to present the curriculum to Foundation Phase children (the Jen a Jim series). There are history programmes which have been produced with the help of historians (Amser maith, maith yn ôl).
As well as educational series, there are programmes which concentrate on health and wellbeing matters such as keeping fit (Heini), mindfulness (Shwshaswyn), cookery and eating healthily (Siôn y Chef).
Worksheets and guidance packs are available for parents to download to go with the programmes.
