South Africa v Wales

27 March 2008

S4C announced today (Thursday, 27 March) that it has won the exclusive terrestrial rights to broadcast highlights of Wales' two crunch rugby tests against South Africa in June.

The Welsh broadcaster will televise highlights of both tests between the current World Cup holders and the Six Nations' Champions on 7 and 14 June in peak-viewing times, just hours after the games are played.

S4C's coverage of the tests at Vodacom Park Stadium, Bloemfontein on Saturday, June 7 and at Loftus Versfeld, Pretoria on Saturday, June 14 will be available free-to-air on all analogue and digital platforms in Wales and on Sky channel 134 in England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

This series will see the Prince William Cup up for grabs - a trophy the Springboks claimed when they defeated Wales 34-12 at the Millennium Stadium in November.

Much has changed since that game as Wales' new coach Warren Gatland has since transformed the team from being World Cup no-hopers into Grand Slam winners.

Geraint Rowlands, S4C's Content Editor Sport said: "We are delighted that we've won exclusive terrestrial highlights to broadcast the South Africa v Wales test series free-to-air.

"It is a fantastic opportunity to see the World Cup winners pitted against the European champions. After the euphoria of the Grand Slam, there will be huge interest in seeing how Warren Gatland's men will measure up against the world's best and S4C is glad once again to be at the heart of the action."

The contract for S4C's coverage will be offered to the independent production sector by means of an open and competitive tender process.

Presenter Eleri Siôn, rugby coach Rowland Phillips and rugby referee Nigel Owens will also team up in South Africa to front a fun-filled show previewing the test series in their own inimitable way.

Notes for Editors: S4C broadcasts Wales' live international matches, live Magners League Cup coverage, Heineken Cup highlights, as well as World Rugby and IRB Sevens highlights. It also has highlights rights to Wales' international football, Welsh domestic football and world rallying championship among other sports.
