Rugby veteran targets penalty kick success in S4C promo

29 May 2012

Welsh rugby stalwart Martyn Williams is expected to win his 100th cap for his country when Wales host the Barbarians at the Millennium Stadium on Saturday 2 June.

The match will be broadcast live on S4C and to mark the occasion, the veteran flanker has filmed a special television advert for the channel where he re-lives one of his most painful and unforgettable experiences on the rugby pitch.

Williams famously missed a conversion in a dramatic penalty shootout at the 2009 Heineken Cup semi-final loss against Leicester. The historic match was the first time a major rugby union encounter had been decided on penalty kicks and followed extra-time where the teams were level on 26-26.

In the comedic promo, Martyn will recreate that penalty kick with the hope of dismissing his demons and hitting the target. Not only does his kick hit the target, the rugby ball flies out of the Millennium Stadium and drops at the nearby SWALEC Stadium, home of Glamorgan cricket club.

Shortly after the rugby’s final whistle, S4C will turn to live Twenty20 cricket as Glamorgan host Surrey (4.15pm). Another three Glamorgan T20 matches will be broadcast on S4C throughout June.

Martyn Williams joins former captain Gareth Thomas (who is currently appearing in S4C’s linguistic reality series cariad@iaith:love4language) and veteran fly-half Stephen Jones as the only players to hit the century of caps for Wales.

The occasion also marks winger Shane Williams’ final professional match. Williams will bow out in front of the Millennium Stadium crowd where he will play against his former teammates as he joins the invitational Barbarians squad.

Gareth Roberts and Dot Davies host Y Clwb Rygbi’s extensive coverage of Wales v Barbarians for S4C from 1.30pm.
