Extensive coverage of the Royal Welsh Show on S4C

16 July 2012

S4C will have something for everyone during the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show in Llanelwedd this week.

The Channel will provide extensive, uninterrupted coverage and more broadcast hours than ever before from the Showground between 23 and 26 July. S4C’s team of presenters will report from the main rings as well as meeting competitors, judges and visitors to the Show.

During the day from 9.00am, Dai Jones, Nia Roberts, Ifan Jones Evans and Meinir Jones will bring the best of the action. Wyn Gruffydd will provide commentary from the main ring. In the evening highlights programmes, Shân Cothi will join Dai to look back at the day’s events.

On Sunday, 22 July, S4C will broadcast a special preview show including highlights of the congregational hymn singing event ‘Moliant y Maes’ at the Showground.

In addition to the television coverage, the live programmes will also be broadcast simultaneously on the S4C website. In addition, people all over the world will be able to tune into live streaming from the main ring from 8.00am to 1.00pm at s4c.co.uk/sioe.

For the first time ever, non-Welsh speaking viewers can enjoy English language commentary on the stock competitions.

Meinir Jones, best-known for presenting rural affairs series Ffermio on S4C, will be making her on-screen Royal Welsh Show debut as she reports from the annual event.

Meinir says, "The Royal Welsh Show is the farming equivalent of the Olympic Games here in Wales. It’s definitely one of the big highlights of the year. I’ve been a regular visitor to Llanelwedd every year since I can remember and have shared some amazing experiences there over the years. Where else can you experience the country’s best food, see the best animals, witness the comical yet competitive nature of the young farmers and catch up with friends – old and new?

"It’s a privilege and an honour to join S4C’s presenting team. During the week, I’ll be among the sheep bringing the best of the competitions and reporting on the results as they come in. I’m sure it will be a very different experience to standing at the side of the ring as opposed to competing with my sheep inside it."

The production team responsible for the coverage is also eager to hear from viewers on social media websites including Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest. It is also possible to share your pictures from the Royal Welsh Show by uploading on the Pinterest website – S4CSioe.

There’s also something for S4C’s younger viewers with the Stwnsh presenters broadcasting live from Llanelwedd throughout the week. From Monday to Thursday, Lois Cernyw and Owain Gwynedd will present live challenges with the young visitors on the Showground.

On Tuesday 24 July, a special edition of Hacio – the current affairs series for young people – will be broadcast from the Royal Welsh Show with Hanna Hopwood and Owain Phillips. This year, Wales’ Young Farmers are raising money for the Air Ambulance and the team will meet young farmers who have depended on the support of the service following accidents in rural Wales.
