S4C film reaches New York Festivals Awards Short List

A short film broadcasted on S4C has reached the list of Finalists in the New York Festivals Awards.

The New York Festivals Awards award the world's best television and films, and Fy Chwaer a Fi has reached the list of Finalists in the Human Concern Productions category.

The film tells the story of Catherine and Kirstie Field, eighteen year-old twins from Bryn near Llanelli who suffer from an unique neurological condition which has paralysed them and robbed them of their speech. Fy Chwaer a Fi sees Catherine and Kirstie communicate with the audience through use of special machines, and share their story with the world for the first time.

Llion Iwan, commissioner of factual programmes for S4C said:

"The twins wanted to speak about their lives and the whole point of the programme was to allow them to do so. Their enthusiasm to communicate and their personalities came over so clearly. It’s a very special documentary film, and reaching this list of Finalists confirms it. It is recognition of the strengths of a programme that made a big impression on S4C’s audience."

Mei Williams originally from Mold is producer and director of Fy Chwaer a Fi.

"We're extremely glad that 'Fy Chwaer a Fi' has been recognised on an international level. I know the family well and it doesn’t surprise me that their spirit and courage has had an effect on people outside of Wales as well. In the face of a terrible illness Catherine and Kirstie's attitudes can inspire all of us."

The winners will be announced at a ceremony in Las Vegas on 9 April.
