S4C and Wales Interactive launch Welsh e-books App

22 March 2013

Today, to coincide with Cardiff's Children's Literary Festival, two Welsh e-books will be published in a partnership between S4C and Wales Interactive.

The e-books titles Y Broga Caradog Ci ein Cymydog and Pysgodyn Tersesa y Gath Drws Nesa'

are available in App form for iPad, iPhone, iTouch and Android devices. The e-book can be bought from Apple's Appstore, Google Play and Amazon.

On the Apps for children between two and five years old children can listen to the stories being read in Welsh by actor and director, Janet Aethwy who was also responsible for adapting the stories to Welsh, or they can choose to read the stories themselves.

The Apps also include simple games such as a jig-saw, feed the frog and dress the toad games.

The inaugural Cardiff Children's Lit Fest is held in the capital city this year with various events being hosted around Cardiff. The Festival goes on until Sunday 24 April and S4C are pleased to launch the Welsh e-books to coincide with the Festival.

It is with the financial aid of S4C's digital fund that it has been made possible for the stories to be adapted to Welsh and published in App form.

Huw Marshall, Digital Manager for S4C said:

"This is a great investment, not only because it allows this particular service to be available through the medium of Welsh, but because it also means that S4C now has the digital template to create similar developments in the future. This platform will allow us to create additional digital content alongside S4C's children's programmes in the future."

David Banner, Managing Director at Wales Interactive is the author of the original English story, Mr Frog the Neighbour's Dog, which he wrote to help his daughter learn to read. David then went on to write a further four books in the Animoolz series. The last three titles will be released in Welsh in the next few months.

David Banner said:

"The support from S4C's digital fund has been very important in allowing us to take the idea to the next level and creating the full interactive touch screen e-books and adapting them to the Welsh language.

"The Welsh language books will allow us to showcase them to a larger audience and it's important to us, as a company based in Wales, that we support the Welsh language. The e-books will do just that and will also promote Wales and its growing digital creative industries on the world stage."
