S4C broadcasts award winning Irish drama – with Welsh subtitles

19 April 2013

An award winning Irish drama is to be broadcast on S4C with on-screen Welsh subtitles. The criw series Corp + Anam won the main prize at the 2012 Celtic Media Fetsival – the Spirit of the Festival award. The S4C broadcast co-insides with this year's festival being held in Swansea this year – on 24 to 26 April.

With the title Corff + Enaid (Body + Soul), the four par series begins on S4C on Saturday 20 April at 10.00pm. The second episode will be shown on the Sunday night, 21 April, with the final two epsiodes on the following weekend.

Corp + Anam was first aired on Irish-language channel TG4 in 2011. As well as its win at the Celtic Media Festival it was also awarded a special Irish Language prize at the Irish Film + Television Awards.

Gwawr Martha Lloyd, S4C Drama Commissioner said, "Good programmes such as Corp + Anam are ones worth sharing with the S4C audience. The success of similar programmes from foreign countries has shown that the audience is more willing than ever to watch quality programming with subtitles."

Finding the true story behind the crime, at any cost, that's what drives the TV crime correspondent Cathal Mac Iarnáin. Corp + Anam is his story as the determined journalist investigates four crimes which delve into the darker side of today's society.

The series' producer is Paddy Hayes of Magamedia productioncompany. He explaims why the hard hitting and relevant storylines was a hit with the Irish viewers, "It struck a chord with people for two reasons. Firstly it is a very honest, warts-and-all portrayal of the darkness that lurks in our society and it had a realism that we seldom see on our screens," explains Paddy who is looking forward to seeing the Welsh reaction. "Secondly, some of the scenarios depicted in the series were loosely based on recent news events in Ireland, and I think this had an interesting effect on the audience - while watching the show, the audience was acutely aware that these shocking events could and indeed, had happened."

In the first episode, Cathal investigates a fatal late night car crash. As he investigates the true circumstances of the accident Cathal comes face to face with the grieving families and through this uncovers the truth. Diarmuid de Faoite plays the role of the crime correspondent Cathal Mac Iarnáin with Maria Doyle Kennedy as Cathal's wife Mairéad.
