26 BAFTA Cymru nominations for S4C programmes – with recognition to emerging talents

03 August 2013

S4C programmes have been nominated for 26 BAFTA Cymru 2013 awards.

Among the nominated programmes is the documentary Gerallt (Cwmni Da) which was one of the highlights of the St David's Day schedule.

Further nominations for S4C documentaries come in the Emerging Talents category, which recognises new talents in the industry. The barrister Gwion Lewis is nominated for his work presenting a programme detailing the history of the Welsh Language Society, Cymdeithas yr Iaith yn 50 (Rondo). Also, musician Meinir Gwilym is recognised for her role as director and producer of the moving documentary single O'r Galon: Karen (Cwmni Da).

In further recognition of S4C's work supporting emerging talents, the short film Cân i Emrys (Double Agent Cyf) has been nominated in the Short Form category. The film was made by student Osian Williams of Graigwen in Pontypridd, who was at the time in his third year at Bangor University reading media and communications.

Another emotional documentary which has been nominated for an award this year is Fy Chwaer a Fi (Boom Pictures Productions). The documentary has already won a Gold Medal Award at the New York Film Festival Awards. Whilst Fy Chwaer a Fi is hoping to take the award in the Director Factual category, Llefydd Sanctaidd (Cwmni Da) is nominated in the Factual Series category.

Current affairs programmes have also been recognised, with two programmes made by Y Byd ar Bedwar (ITV Cymru) up for an award in the same category - Current Affairs. The coverage of the Olympic Games by the Newyddion team (BBC Cymru Wales) has also been nominated in the News Coverage category.

Three children's programmes have been nominated: Bla Bla Blewog (Adastra), Stwnsh Sadwrn (Boom Pictures Productions) and the Makaton programme Dwylo'r Enfys (Ceidiog).

S4C broadcasts have stolen the show in the Sport Programmes and Live Outside Broadcasts category, claiming all three of the nominations: Y Sioe 12 (Boom Pictures Productions); Sgorio (Rondo); Y Clwb Rygbi Ryngwladol (BBC Cymru Wales)

Drama has also been recognised, with nominations for Alys (Teledu Apollo), Gwaith Cartref (Fiction Factory) and Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn (Rondo). Sara Lloyd-Gregory is nominated as Best Actress for her role as Alys, and Rhodri Meilyr for Best Actor as the lead role in Gwlad yr Astra Gwyn. Siwan Jones, author of Alys, is up for the best Author award.

Aled Sam is nominated for Best Presenter for the series Sam ar y Sgrin (Tinopolis) and Côr Cymru (Rondo) is nominated in the Music and Entertainment category.

There is also a nomination for graphic design company Rough Collie for their Visual and Graphic Effects work in the onscreen Calon Cenedl campaign to promote S4C programmes and services.

Dafydd Rhys, S4C Content Commissioner, says:

"In a year when BAFTA has announced a record amount of entries with a higher standard than ever, S4C have succeeded to claim 26 nominations.

"This shows that S4C's productions are of the highest standard and I would like to congratulate and thank everyone in the production sector, the independent companies and within BBC Cymru Wales and ITV Wales, for their hard work and creativity during a difficult financial period. Despite the obstacles, S4C and the providers are maintaining the ambition to provide content of the highest standard across all genres, and the 26 nominations are proof of that."

Matt Johnson and Sian Lloyd will present the BAFTA Cymru Awards Ceremony in Cardiff on Sunday 29 September.
