Chloe from Hengoed wins Bryn Terfel Scholarship

Twenty year old flautist, Chloe Angharad Bradshaw from Hengoed in the Rhymney Valley won the coveted Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel Scholarship 2013 in a concert shown live on S4C last night - Sunday, 6 October. The concert, presented by Nia Roberts and Ifan Jones Evans, was held in the Great Hall, Aberystwyth Arts Centre.

Chloe was one of six finalists in the competition. The final can be seen again in the programme Ysgoloriaeth Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel 2013 on S4C’s online service s4c.co.uk/clic for the next 35 days.

The six who competed for the Scholarship and a cash prize of £4,000 were all winners of individual competitions under 25 years of age at this year’s Pembrokeshire Urdd National Eisteddfod.

A former pupil of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Chloe is now studying music in Jesus College Oxford. She’s a leading member of the college orchestra and sinfonietta. She was a member of the Youth Orchestra of Great Britain and performed in some of Britain’s best-known concert halls. Chloe was the youngest winner of the Caerphilly Young Musician of the Year and since then she has won the Instrumental Blue Riband at the National Eisteddfod and she won the Gregynog Young Musician prize in 2010. She won the instrumental solo competition in the Pembrokeshire Urdd National Eisteddfod.

After winning the prize, Chloe, who has already won several awards for her playing, said: “I couldn’t believe it. It’s the biggest honour I’ve had in Wales. My plans now are to continue performing and to do a masters’ degree in London, Europe or America.”

The five others competing for the Scholarship this year were:

• Gareth Davies from St Clears, Carmarthen – winner of the solo from a stage musical at the Urdd National Eisteddfod

• Dion Davies from Newcastle Emlyn – winner of the theatrical presentation

• Rhodri Prys Jones from Llanfyllin – winner of the solo

• Trystan Gruffydd from Pontypridd – winner of the boys’ solo folk dance

• Steffan Rhys Hughes from Denbigh – winner of the Cerdd Dant solo, recitation and folk song solo

Ysgoloriaeth Urdd Gobaith Cymru Bryn Terfel 2013 is an Avanti production for S4C.
