On this day in 1968, a record crowd gathered at the Vetch Field, Swansea to witness the Swans’ 4th round FA Cup match against Arsenal.
Despite the electrifying atmoshphere created by the 32,796 in attendance, Swansea’s run in the competition came to an end as they lost the game by a single goal.
The goal was scored by a young striker called Bobby Gould … now, I wonder what became of him!
To put the record in context, the biggest crowd to have watched the Swans at the Liberty Stadium since they left the Vetch in May 2005 is 19,288.
And seeing as the capacity of the Liberty is 20,500 the record of 32,796 for a Swans home match is likely to stand for all of eternity!
On this day in 1956 Portsmouth took on Newcastle United in the first Football League match played under floodlights.
